Trade Coffee
Coffee is one of the world’s most traded commodities. The coffee bean as an edible and drinkable product has been used for more than a thousand years. Among the first uses of coffee was as a food by African tribes in the 9th century. It wasn’t until the 11th century that coffee was used as a hot drink.
The commercial cultivation of coffee beans began in the 15th century in Arabia, it was at this time that sanctions were put on the export of coffee plants, where it was illegal to take plants out of the region. This however did not stop merchants from smuggling plants away with their goods. It was this operation which led to the development of coffee cultivation in India.
Coffee was also introduced to Europe at this time as traders brought back the beans from India along the spice route.
There are 3 major coffee production regions in the world, Latin America, which includes Brazil the world’s largest producer, Columbia, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Panama, Africa/Arabia which includes Kenya, Yemen and Ethiopia and Asia/Pacific which includes Indonesia and China.

Trade Tobacco
Tobacco is a natural product processed from the leaves of the genus Nicotiana plant and is grown commercially in the Dominican Republic, USA, Indonesia, Mexico, Honduras, Brazil and Cuba.
During cultivation, tobacco seeds are usually scattered onto the surface of the soil as germination of the seeds is activated by light. The seeds are then usually fertilized with wood ash or animal manure before being covered to protect the young plants from disease and frost.
The optimum growing season for tobacco in the United States is between March and September.
